Flags flown at half-mast after death of Kirklees councillor
Cllr Cahal Burke - who represented the Lindley ward and was a former Mayor of Kirklees - has passed away
A Kirklees councillor has died, as flags are flown at half-mast above the borough’s town halls.
Kirklees Council has confirmed the death of Cllr Cahal Burke (48) who represented the Lindley ward from 2010. He served as a Liberal Democrat councillor until last week when he was listed as an Independent councillor.
Councillor Burke was the Mayor of Kirklees between 2023 and 2024, and took on the role of Chair on the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee. Over the years, Cllr Burke held the posts of Deputy Leader and Group Business Manager of the Lib Dems, as well as sitting on planning and licensing committees.
Aside from his work on the council, Cllr Burke was active in his local community of Lindley, including through his role in establishing the Lindley Community Group which he chaired and volunteered with for over 15 years. He set up the Lindley Running Club with Lindley Community Group and took part in Marathons and Half Marathons in his free time.
A spokesperson for Kirklees Council said: “The council has been informed of the death of Cllr Cahal Burke. Our thoughts are with Cllr Burke’s family, friends and colleagues. In line with council protocol, flags on our town halls will fly at half-mast today.”
