Colourful dog-themed art trial installed in Horbury’s Carr Lodge Park
Six cast iron canines have been installed along footpaths at Carr Lodge Park in Horbury as part of a community-led project.
A colourful dog-themed art trail has been unveiled in a historic Wakefield park.
Six cast iron canines have been installed along footpaths at Carr Lodge Park in Horbury as part of a community-led project.
The life-sized pieces feature man’s best friend playing, sniffing and sitting and were created by artist Jenny Hutchinson.
The works aim to highlight the park’s rich natural environment and were created in partnership with the Friends of Horbury’s Parks, the town’s Senior Citizens Support Group and the 44th Guides at Horbury Bridge Church.
Artist Jenny Hutchinson said: “I love working with people, both adults and children and being inspired by nature and the natural world.
“I saw this artist’s brief and the location as the perfect opportunity to highlight the local flora and fauna of our community parks.
“This will help to brighten up the areas during the winter months and will also provide opportunities for children to learn about the plants and wildlife of Horbury.”
Lukasz Borcz, the council’s cabinet member for culture and sport, said: “This art trail is really vibrant and brings fun and colour to this much-loved park.
“With the support of local ward councillors and the community, this project has created something meaningful that connects with everyone.
“It’s another great reason for families to come for a walk and enjoy the great outdoor spaces we have got in Horbury.”
A planning application for the scheme previously submitted by Friends of Horbury’s Park said: “The proposed dog sculptures will bring a sense of character and cultural value to Carr Lodge Park.
“The project promotes interaction, inclusivity, health and wellbeing, and public enjoyment while being sensitively designed in scale, material, painted design, and siting to preserve the park’s character.
“The sculptures will be accessible and durable, enhancing the public realm with minimal impact on the landscape of the park.”
Carr Lodge Park occupies the grounds of the former Carr Lodge estate, built between 1770 and 1775.
The grounds were re-purposed for public use during the 20th century, becoming a formal municipal park and recreational space.
