BRADFORD’S first double red lines – which will see drivers immediately fined if they park on them – could be introduced on a city centre street.

Bradford Council voted to introduce “red routes” in the District at a meeting last year.

And now it has been revealed that the first such restrictions would be on Nelson Street – next to Trafalgar House police station.

It comes after police urged Bradford Council to take action on the street, which they say can often be blighted by parking that blocks emergency vehicles.

But Bradford Council has acknowledged the roll out of red routes has been delayed as the Council tried to buy the ANPR cameras needed for the routes to work.

Once red routes are introduced, anyone stopping on the double red lines would be immediately fined, with drivers given no grace period to move on like with double yellow lines.

Enforcement would be carried out by ANPR cameras rather than traffic wardens.

There had been little news on the implementation of red routes since the plans were approved by Council bosses last Summer.

It was initially suggested that red lines could be added to areas of Manchester Road.

Late last year Councillor Matt Edwards (Green, Tong) asked Bradford Council for an update on the planned roll out.

The response, which has only recently been published, said: “The Red Route policy was approved by Executive in July 2025.

“This policy set out the criteria for roads which could be considered for red route implementation but did not name any planned schemes.

“As enforcement of Red Routes is carried out by ANPR cameras implementation of routes has been delayed due to the procurement of type approved cameras for enforcement purposes, as well as discussions with Legal Services about the requirements for the associated Traffic Regulation Order.

“Currently the first route which is being developed for implementation is Nelson Street (adjacent to the police station) which has been identified following an approach to the Council by the police.

“Further potential routes remain in consideration. We are keen to progress more as required but no firm proposals have been developed at this time.”

The Local Democracy Reporting Service asked West Yorkshire Police why it had made the request for a red route on Nelson Street.

A Bradford District Police Spokesperson said: “Nelson Street is a major route into Bradford with a police station, a college and primary school on it.

“Emergency Police vehicles respond from the location and at times the route can be blocked causing a hazard to road users and pedestrians.

“We would support any measure that keeps the area as clear as possible to maximise the safety of everyone.”
