Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was hit and killed on the the A1(M) northbound at Darrington this morning.

Officers were called at 7.36am to reports of a man walking on the hard shoulder, before being struck by a HGV. He was pronounced dead at the scene just before the Ferrybridge junction.

It's though the same man was involved in an earlier collision on Valley Road, Darrington at 7.16am, involving a white Renault Captur and a white Toyota Proace City van.

The van driver reportedly left the area on foot, while the other driver was taken to the hospital.

The deceased has not been formally identified but is believed to be a 60-year-old man from Leeds.

Detective Inspector Daniel Ridgway of West Yorkshire Police stated:

"This is a tragic incident in which a man has lost his life. His family are aware and are being offered specialist support."

"We have already spoken to a number of witnesses, but I would urge anyone else who has any information that could assist us in our enquiries to please get in contact.

"We are particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the area who has a vehicle with a dashcam fitted which may have captured this man’s movements.

"It is anticipated that a closure will remain in place on the A1M in both directions into the afternoon.

"This is to ensure that the circumstances of this man’s death are fully investigated and to make sure the road is safe for other road users. Members of the public are thanked for their patience."
