People in Teesside are being reminded to speak out about how they're feeling as mental health charities are there for them.

The Samaritans say they offer a safe, non judgemental space to talk as they take part in an awareness day.

Annemarie Stubbs, branch director of Teesside Samaritans, which is based in Middlesbrough, said: "If you look at the date and you look at it on paper, you'll see that it is 24-7, so the 24th of July makes for 24-7. And the linkage to that with Samaritans is that we are a supporting charity that aims to be available 24/7 to people that need us, and that's anybody, regardless of whoever you may be.

"We're here to listen, we're here to provide emotional support. If you're finding things are really tough, you know that you're going through a really difficult time and you're struggling at the moment and you just need somebody to talk to and you haven't really got anybody else around you, sometimes even if you have got somebody else around you, it's nice to be able to talk to someone who doesn't know you and can just give you that listening ear, impartial support, non-judgmental space.

"As a charity overall, we know that the demand for the service has and is increasing and it's for all number of reasons, different things that come up, different things that people are battling with, especially if it's things that are kind of really happening in society at the moment or changes that are happening and things like that.

"Whatever it is that might be happening for you, whether it's poor mental health, something that you're struggling with day-to-day, it doesn't have to be, you know, you're feeling suicidal or having those thoughts. It can be anything that's on your mind or troubling you at the moment.

"I think the really important message is that, you know, you're not alone in that. And although it may feel like that sometimes, just know that you're not and that Samaritans are here for you. Whenever somebody calls and has a conversation with us, they'll say a lot of different things. Obviously, sometimes some of those things are quite difficult.

"Equally though, sometimes people will share positive things and having something positive in a conversation brings a bit of balance and it gives somebody a little bit of a perspective that actually there might be a way through things that they've not thought of before."
