People are being urged to reconsider heading abroad to get work done

A Teesside dentist is warning us of the dangers of going to Türkiye to get your teeth done.

We've seen a rise in social media posts and adverts about Turkish 'consultants' coming over to the UK to hold talks on low cost procedures.

Paul Woodhouse, from Grange Dental Practice in Norton, said: "It's cheap because it's rubbish. Every job I've seen come back from Türkiye is appalling.

"I think it's kind of hilarious. There's an old phrase 'you buy cheap, you buy twice' and people can't put their teeth together, their teeth underneath, the bridges that they get glued on are linked together so there's all sorts of problems, there's untreated decay, and there's implants put into sinuses.

"It's a nightmare to sort out and there's very few of us who are prepared to take it on because it takes a lot of time and effort and it's very complex work. There's been a thousand horror stories of bad medical procedures, what are the heck are you doing? You're saving a couple of bob. It's not worth it.

"We had a woman who had had five implants in her upper jaw, the two on the right hand side were both into sinus, the one in the centre was in the floor of her nose, so you could actually see it poking through when you looked up her nostril, and she had massive, massive potentially life threatening levels of infection.

"This is a woman who was absolutely desperate. She had very, very little money and she begged every penny should could get to get an implant solution when in reality, what she needed was some decent well made dentures, which would have cost her probably half of what she spent on the implants anyway.

"People who go just because they want to look like somebody off TikTok is just daft. You can get better, nicer and gentler work done in this country for the same price and it's guaranteed. If something goes wrong over here you get looked after, if it goes wrong in Türkiye, they aren't going to touch you.

"Reconstructing a mouth that's been butchered is tremendously difficult and you essentially have to go back to scratch, you have to take everything apart and start from the beginning and that takes a lot of time. It's not cheap and it's not easy. It can take upwards of a year to rehabilitate a mouth."

Here is an advert that popped up on our Facebook feed, with the name of the company censored.
