Residents in Stanley call for speed measures on View Lane
Petition aims to address reckless driving and improve safety
Residents of View Lane in Stanley have launched a petition calling for urgent speed restrictions to combat reckless driving on their street.
They claim that drivers are turning the narrow road into a shortcut, often using excessive speed, mounting pavements, and ignoring safety measures as they attempt to beat traffic queues nearby.
The petition expresses concern for the safety of residents and pedestrians, including children, dog walkers, cyclists, and elderly people, who frequently use the busy pedestrian routes around View Lane and Cemetery Road.
Occurrences of aggressive driving behaviour and near misses have prompted locals to demand traffic calming measures to protect their community.
The petition states: “This has become increasingly dangerous to residents and pedestrians due to drivers’ excessive speed, risk-taking behaviour, threatening behaviour, and abuse should any person or vehicle obstruct their way. Accidents have been witnessed.”
Residents hope that introducing such measures will deter 'rat-running', reduce traffic speed, and improve safety on View Lane.
Durham County Council is set to review the petition after it closes for signatures on June 3rd.
Kieron Moralee, the council’s traffic management section manager, said: “We will consider the e-petition once the deadline for signatures has passed. This will involve assessing the location against established criteria for the introduction of traffic calming measures. A response to the petition will be provided after that.”
