Man found guilty of the manslaughter of Aiden Matthews in Norton
31-year-old Aiden Matthews died from brain injuries
A man has been found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the death of 31-year-old Aiden Matthews, who suffered fatal brain injuries in an attack in Norton on New Year's Eve.
Declan Moor, aged 21, was convicted at Teesside Crown Court, following an investigation into the assault that led to Matthews' death in January.
Max Cashman, aged 30, and Lee Bradshaw, aged 22, were also involved in the attack and had pleaded guilty to manslaughter earlier this year.
Speaking after the verdict, Cleveland Police highlighted the difficult journey Matthews' family has faced since his untimely passing.
Senior Investigating Officer Deb Fenny shared, “Today’s verdict marks the conclusion of a complex and challenging investigation, and I am pleased that we have been able to secure justice for Aiden Matthews and, most importantly, for those who loved him.
“Nothing can undo the devastating loss of Aiden. He was a son, a brother, a father and a friend, and the pain his family have endured since his death is unimaginable. Whilst today's outcome cannot bring Aiden back, I hope it provides his family with some measure of closure and reassurance that those responsible have now been held accountable for their actions.
“Throughout the investigation and court proceedings, Aiden’s family have shown extraordinary courage, dignity and resilience. They have had to repeatedly relive the circumstances surrounding Aiden’s death whilst listening to difficult and distressing evidence. Their strength throughout has been remarkable.
“What makes this case particularly tragic is that Aiden was unaware of the catastrophic injuries he had suffered following the assault. He returned home believing he would recover, when in reality his injuries would prove fatal just days later.
“I would like to thank everyone involved in the investigation for their professionalism, commitment and determination in securing this outcome. Most importantly, our thoughts remain with Aiden’s family and friends as they continue to come to terms with their loss. I hope they can take some comfort in knowing that justice has now been achieved on Aiden's behalf.”
Sentencing for Moor, Cashman, and Bradshaw will take place at a later date.
