A County Durham MP's urging people to continue supporting the campaign calling for better safeguarding for at-risk children.

It comes as there's a Westminster debate on 'Maya's Law' on Monday after a petition reached over 100,000 signatures.

Two year-old Maya Chappell was shaken to death in 2022 by her mum's partner at the time and her family's been campaigning so no other family goes through what they have.

One of the things they're wanting is a scheme where people can access information about caregivers' violent or abusive histories.

Liz Twist, MP for Blaydon and Consett, said: "I feel that it's absolutely fantastic that this petition really went well beyond the 100,000 signatures required and guaranteed that Maya's Law will be debated in Westminster.

"It's absolutely fantastic. I know how determined both Gemma and Rachael have been to reach this target and it's their drive and conviction that have got us to this place. They've worked so hard to achieve this.

"I'm so proud of the way that people in our communities have backed Maya's Law and the campaign. And I just know that they will keep on supporting the campaign until we get there and protect more children."
