Women in Teesside are being urged to consider becoming a taxi driver to help tackle violence against women and girls.

The owner of Monroe Taxi is raising awareness about the lack of females in the industry.

Martyna Kalarikkal said: "A lot of women just were not sure if that's something that they can even do, because you don't see many female drivers in taxis around Teesside. So naturally it comes to your mind, 'oh maybe you're not allowed to apply.' And a lot of women were not aware that this is something that they can do.

"We've had a lot of interest from mums specifically because it's really hard for them to go to 9 to 5. A lot of them stay unemployed so they can spend more time with their children and they can balance it all. We are getting a lot of interest from busy mums, you know, who just want to get back into work and have flexible hours.

"For the next 12 months, I just want to see how this evolves and how this develops in Teesside area. But I think if this becomes successful in here, I'm more than happy to expand into different regions. And I do want to target regions that are maybe not so much with a high crime rate, but with the need for women to feel a bit more safer."
