Middlesbrough set for Wembley show down after Southampton's play-off exclusion
Hull City and Middlesbrough to vie for Premier League place this Saturday
Middlesbrough will face Hull City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium this Saturday after Southampton's appeal over their exclusion was rejected.
Southampton's appeal was dismissed by an EFL league arbitration panel on Wednesday, following an independent disciplinary commission's decision to expel them for spying on rivals' training sessions.
Middlesbrough, who were reinstated into the final, had initially dropped out after losing 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals to Southampton.
The decision followed Southampton's admission of spying on three competitors, including Middlesbrough prior to the semi-final first leg.
Southampton argued that the expulsion was “manifestly disproportionate," but their appeal has been denied.
The EFL confirmed, “The determination means that the original sanction of expulsion from the Championship play-offs remains in place."
The expulsion also comes with a four-point deduction for Southampton in the 2026-27 Championship season and a formal reprimand.
Southampton expressed disappointment at the ruling in a statement but pledged to respond with “humility, accountability and determination.”
Southampton's Leo Scienza shared his feelings, describing the situation as "heartbreaking" and sympathising with all clubs involved.
The Championship play-off final will kick off at 15:30 BST on Saturday, with Middlesbrough and Hull City battling for a coveted place in the Premier League.
