Middlesbrough chippy hoping to bring back discount meal scheme
Belle Vue Fisheries have been offering ÂŁ1 meals to help families in need
A Middlesbrough chippy owner is hoping to bring back his discount meal scheme to support families in need.
Belle Vue Fisheries offered ÂŁ1 meals to children so they wouldn't go hungry over the summer holidays, with other businesses helping too.
Owner Jas Kullar said: "It was really good to be honest, especially in the first couple of weeks we had loads of kids coming in all days. Eventually after a while I think they might have got sick of sandwiches and stuff so it was mainly kids coming in for the sausage and chips and pizza and chips after that. It was really good though.
"Most people that came in said that they really appreciated it and they just said it was an extra cost that they didn't have to think about. It was still ÂŁ1 but they said compared to everything else, because the summer holidays are expensive anyway, but they really appreciated that they could just come in and feed the kids for ÂŁ1.
"We had a lot of people just popping in and giving us money and some of them sent us bank transfers as well, so obviously that really helped to be able to help everyone that we did, so thank you to all of them people and obviously, thank you to all the other businesses that got involved. Thank you to the kids that came in that were really appreciative as well and the parents.
"I've already thought about doing it in the October term holidays but we'll put a post out and see if any other businesses want to get involved again too."
