A major roadwork project in Middlesbrough that's been ongoing for months is set to come to an end by early September.
Essential repairs on the A174 Marton Interchange Overbridge (A172 Stokesley Road) in Middlesbrough have been ongoing since 2nd March this year.
In the spring, Middlesbrough Council warned of “severe disruption”, as the bridge became a single lane in each direction, with a contraflow system in place. Those crossing the bridge have not been able to turn onto the A174, while drivers joining Stokesley Road from the carriageway below have only been able to turn left, not right.
Now, in papers that went o full council on Wednesday (15th July), it has been confirmed that works are expected to be completed by the beginning of September this year. Labour Councillor Peter Gavigan, executive member for environment at the council, described the project as “progressing well”, adding: “We have started the stage two works on the opposite side of the carriageway, and the project is currently running to schedule.”
The A174 Marton Interchange works will deliver:
- Replacing the bridge deck joints
- Re-waterproofing and resurfacing
- Concrete repairs to the abutments
- Alterations to the footways with addition of new pedestrian guard rails
- Installation of a higher 1.8m parapet
- Renewal of the existing traffic signal junction
The closure of sections of the road has been put down to the bridge deck work. The contraflow system, ensuring a continuation of both north and south traffic flows has been credited for “avoiding lengthy diversions for residents and customers using Stokesley Road”.
