The Great North East Sausage Roll Off: A Tasty Competition with a Community Purpose
Get ready for a sizzling new culinary competition as Foodie Book Club CIC launches the first-ever Great North East Sausage Roll Off, taking place on Saturday 30th August 2025 at The Charles Attwood Club in Wolsingham. This fun-filled, family-friendly event invites bakers of all ages and skill levels to roll up their sleeves and showcase their best sausage rolls, side dishes, and cake-decorating flair. With five creative adult categories—from traditional to vegan, and even international sausage rolls—there’s something for every flavour lover.
A children’s competition also runs alongside, with challenges tailored to age groups and themed around Marvel or Disney.
Hosted by community-focused social enterprise Foodie Book Club CIC, the competition has a greater mission than just crowning a champion:
• Raising awareness of food insecurity and isolation in the North East
• Fundraising for local food and literacy projects
• Encouraging other communities to launch their own food-based social initiatives
• Recruiting volunteers to help expand impact across the region
“Everyone knows a sausage roll – they’re fun, versatile, and totally crowd-pleasing,” said a spokesperson from Foodie Book Club CIC. “We wanted something creative and accessible that could bring people together – from kids decorating biscuits to bakers reimagining what a sausage roll can be.”
The competition will be judged blind, with entrants assigned a unique number to ensure fairness. Winners from each category will be featured in the Weardale Gazette and across social media, with full recipe credits. Special guest judges include Ahmed Abdalla, Head Chef at The Legacy, Grand Hotel York, and Kyle Bowman, Executive Head Chef at The Exchange 1856, North Shields and North East Chef of the Year 2023.
The Charles Attwood Club will also be hosting entertainment and activities throughout the day to make it a celebration for the whole family.
