Darlington Borough Council are launching new ways to help people into work with six new courses for people to take part in.

The ‘Pathways to Employment’ programme, delivered by Learning & Skills from September, will support local adults to take their first steps towards careers in construction, hospitality, health and social care, customer service, and working with children and young people. A specialist fostering pathway is also available to support new and existing foster carers who want to develop skills to support them in their role.

Funded through Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) Adult Skills funding and delivered in partnership with local businesses and support organisations, the courses provide a structured, end-to-end pathway into employment. Learners will build confidence, gain recognised qualifications, and develop the skills needed to secure roles in high-demand sectors - with opportunities to connect directly with recruiting employers.

The courses are open to Darlington residents aged 19 and over who are currently unemployed or looking to move into a new career. They are particularly suitable for those without recent work experience, with few or no qualifications, or facing other barriers to employment.

Most learners can access the courses free of charge, with additional financial support available in some cases to help with travel or childcare costs.

Courses run one day per week over 12 to 18 weeks at venues across Darlington. Online learning may be available for some learners.

Participants will:

  • build confidence and motivation
  • develop practical, work-related skills
  • improve job prospects through employer engagement
  • gain job search and application skills
  • progress towards employment or further study.

Councillor Chris McEwan, Cabinet Member for Economy at Darlington Borough Council, said: “Access to good employment is about more than economic security, it is the foundation for healthier lives, stable housing, and stronger communities.

“In Darlington, we are committed to raising aspirations and helping people realise their potential. These courses play a vital role in equipping residents with the skills needed to access the many high-quality job opportunities available across the Tees Valley. They provide a supportive environment where learners can build confidence and take meaningful steps towards their chosen careers.

“They also benefit local employers by creating a pipeline of capable, work-ready candidates, helping strengthen Darlington’s position as a great place to invest and do business.”

Full details of upcoming courses and how to enrol are available on the council website or by calling 01325 405601.

Spaces are limited, and residents are encouraged to apply early to avoid disappointment.
