A cordon is still in place, and explosives experts remain on the scene at Crimdon Dene beach today, after what's believed to be World War 2 ordnance was discovered yesterday.
Dozens of what are thought to be SIPs – a phosphorus based incendiary device used in WW2 - were uncovered yesterday, and it's believed they had been set alight.
One member of the public suffered minor burns and was treated in hospital.
A controlled explosion took place last night and a cordon remains in place to allow experts to check the wider location. They will remain there until they are confident the area has been cleared.
Cleveland Police say:
"We would ask people to stay away from the area while this operation is in progress and we thank the public for their assistance and co-operation.
"Again, we urge anyone who ever comes across similar items of ordnance or items/substances of unknown origin to contact police immediately with a description of the item/s and their location so we can take appropriate action."
