County Durham and Darlington firefighters to join 25th anniversary 9/11 run in New York
Officers from Durham Constabulary are also taking part in the 5k event next month
Firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) will take part in the forthcoming Tunnel to Towers run in New York to honour the memory of those who lost their lives on 9/11.
The annual 5K run and walk, organised by the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, retraces the final steps of New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighter Stephen Siller.
Siller ran through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to reach the World Trade Center on 11th September 2001, sacrificing his life to save others.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the event, set to take place on Sunday, 27th September.
While the annual event aims to raise funds for the American Tunnel to Towers Foundation, the CDDFRS team has committed to raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity, which offers care and wellbeing support to UK fire service members and their families.
High Handenhold Watch Manager Jamie Smith shared the significance of the event, highlighting its deeper meaning beyond a mere journey or challenge.
He said, "For many of us, this is far more than a journey or a challenge.
"It is an opportunity to honour the courage, sacrifice, and selflessness of the first responders and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001."
Smith further emphasised the poignant reminder of service and sacrifice symbolised by retracing Firefighter Stephen Siller's route.
Smith revealed that various team members have participated annually since 2013, with some making their debut this year.
In 2026, the largest collective group to date will participate, involving 26 colleagues from CDDFRS, London Fire Brigade, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the NHS, and Durham Constabulary.
Smith remarked that regardless of badges or services represented, participants are united by common values of courage, commitment, and service.
"As we take part in this special 25th-anniversary event, we do so with humility, respect, and gratitude," he said.
