The County Durham family of a newborn baby who died 40 hours after birth are raising money for a bereavement suite at Darlington Memorial Hospital.

They're aiming to raise £1,000 towards the suite in memory of their daughter Lainey-Raine who died in June last year.

Her mum, Angel Buxton, said: "Being on labour ward was absolutely daunting. Like to have to walk out of my room to try and walk, to try and get my body better was just horrifying. Everywhere I looked there was a newborn baby or there was a pregnant woman.

"Having a bereavement suite means the right people can come to you so that you get the right aftercare. You aren't just stuck in a labour room, you aren't having to listen to all of that, you are in a peaceful, quiet space where you can enjoy your time that you have with your baby.

"A lot of places have bereavement suites; you have places like Durham, the RVI, James Cook, and Darlington Memorial Hospital doesn't have one.

"They are trying to raise the funds to get one but it's coming very slowly. I want to speed that process up quicker because having to watch people walk out with healthy babies and you walk out with a 4Lewis memory box absolutely kills you.

"It's just a pain you cannot describe. We were very much forgotten about when we were put in that room. There was a lot of people who wouldn't come anywhere near us because we'd lost our baby."
