Award winning County Durham country star releases new track

Award-winning British country artist Hayley McKay is thrilled to announce the release of her new single, “Sweet Surprise”, available on all major streaming platforms from 29th November. Sweet Surprise combines McKay’s signature vocals with a romantic narrative capturing those beautiful “out of the blue” moments.

Earlier this year, was invited to a unique songwriting retreat in the French Alps hosted by British band The Dunwells and Pablo Ettinger, co-founder of Caffe Nero. Set against the stunning backdrop of the French Alps, the retreat provided an inspiring environment where McKay, alongside co-writers Lesley Pike and Simon Walker, crafted “Sweet Surprise” Hayley describes the experience as “magical,” adding, “The breathtaking surroundings and the collaborative energy with other talented songwriters made it the perfect environment for creating something truly special. ‘Sweet Surprise’ captures the beauty and mystery of unexpected love.”
At the end of the retreat, Hayley and her fellow writers performed live in a local village, surrounded by majestic mountains. This memorable performance marked the first public unveiling of “Sweet Surprise,” which received a warm response from the intimate audience and set the stage for its upcoming release.
A Visual Journey with Local Talent
Known for her dedication to community involvement, Hayley is bringing local talent into the music video for “Sweet Surprise.” To tell a love story through dance, the video will feature an 8- year-old ballroom dancer from the area. The storyline follows her character into young adulthood, as she eventually dances with her partner, symbolising the growth and evolution of love over time. “I love working with local performers and connecting the community to my music.”

Back in the UK, McKay returned to her beloved Forum Music Studios in Durham to record and produce the single. Known for its grassroots support of local music, The Forum is a cornerstone in McKay’s career, and she values the opportunity to create music in such a familiar and supportive space. “Sweet Surprise” was further refined by Jez Larder’s brilliant mixing and mastered by Pete Maher, whose impressive portfolio includes work with The Killers, Katy Perry, and U2. “Working with Jez and Pete elevated the song even further.
Already a Hit at Caffe Nero
Demonstrating its instant appeal, “Sweet Surprise” has already been picked up by Caffe Nero and will soon be featured in over 600 Caffe Nero locations across the UK. This partnership offers fans a chance to enjoy McKay’s music in an everyday setting and brings her sound to new listeners in one of the UK’s favourite coffeehouse brands.
