Ten men were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and taken to police custody for questioning. Since then, they have been released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.

T/Chief Superintendent Martin Hopps, Cleveland Police’s head of operations, said: “The majority of people who go to football games do so for an enjoyable and fun time, meaning it is rare for violence associated to occur. However, when it does, we will ensure action is taken so people know there is absolutely no place for it in our communities.

“These targeted arrests are an example of that. It shows the robust action we will take and is testament to our commitment in keeping members of the public safe, before, during and after the matches.

“The message is clear, if you choose to partake in violence we will not stop until you have been identified, arrested and dealt with appropriately.”
