Wiltshire secures £206m funding for transport improvements
Government support to enhance roads, buses and green infrastructure
Wiltshire Council has obtained more than £206 million in Government funding aimed at improving transport throughout the county.
This announcement was made following a Cabinet decision on Wednesday, 29th April.
The Cabinet has agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department for Transport, confirming Wiltshire's share from the Integrated Transport Fund and Bus Services Fund over the next four years.
The investment, scheduled for 2026/27 through 2029/30, will support a broad array of transport enhancements including road maintenance and improvements, bolstering local bus services, and investing in walking, cycling, and sustainable travel infrastructure.
Specific allocations include road resurfacing and repairs, support for essential bus routes, enhancement of walking and cycling infrastructure, investment in electric vehicle charging stations, and local transport developments that increase safety and connectivity.
Additionally, the funding will reinforce planning and monitoring processes to ensure efficient project delivery that offers value for money.
This agreement gives Wiltshire Council greater certainty regarding future transport funding and enables long-term planning for the benefit of residents, businesses, and communities in the county.
Councillor Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, stated, “This is a significant and very welcome investment for Wiltshire. Securing more than £206m of Government funding gives us the stability and confidence we need to plan ahead and deliver real improvements for residents.
“The funding will be spent on the things that really matter to people, including improving the condition of our roads, supporting bus services that people rely on, and investing in safer, greener ways to travel.
“It also allows us to take a long-term approach, making sure transport across Wiltshire continues to support our communities, our economy and our environment.”
A Local Transport Delivery Plan will be released later this year, outlining how the funds will be utilised, with clear governance, monitoring, and reporting arrangements in line with Department for Transport mandates.
