Swindon Town have announced the signing of Moldovan international Stephan Negru on a two-year contract.

The 23-year-old defender will officially become part of the team on 1st July, once his current contract with Oxford United concludes and pending EFL approval.

Negru joined Oxford United in January 2023, making 21 appearances before embarking on several loan spells across different clubs.

He first played for Salford City during the 2024/2025 season, contributing in 32 matches.

His playing stint saw Salford City finishing just outside the SkyBet League Two play-off spots.

After a positive season in the fourth tier, the 23-year-old joined Bristol Rovers on loan for the first half of the 2025/2026 campaign, before finishing the season with Tranmere Rovers.

In total, Negru made 24 appearances in all competitions last season, ending the campaign as a key figure in Pete Wild’s side as they secured their EFL status for another season.

Before moving to Oxford in 2023, Negru progressed through the academy system at Irish side Shelbourne, making nine senior appearances before earning a move to England at the age of 20.

Speaking on joining Swindon, he said: “Yeah, I’m excited, I’m happy to get it done and over the line, so I’m just looking forward to getting started.

“Obviously, after a little break, it’s good to get that hunger and eagerness to play football again, so I can’t wait to meet everyone and just get going.

“I’ve played against Swindon multiple times, and I’m looking forward to playing in front of these fans here and showing them what I’m capable of doing, and hopefully we can achieve something great this season.”

Manager, Ian Holloway added: “I really like him, and I’m delighted to have him. I can’t wait to start working with him.

“He’s a combative centre-back who is also very comfortable on the ball, and he’ll be a great addition to our backline.

“Although he is right-footed, he can play centrally, on the right side, or on the left side of defence. If Tafazolli has any problems or picks up an injury, he can step in. He’s also excellent in the air and wins a lot of first contacts from headers.

“He’s played a lot of games for someone of his age and is very mature. He communicates well, can organise and lead the defensive line, and will be a great asset to our backline.”
