A prolific Swindon shoplifter has been jailed after he pleaded guilty to multiple thefts.

Martin Burrows, 46, of no fixed address, appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on Friday (February 6th) and was given a 28 week custodial sentence.

He was also made the subject of a two year Criminal Behaviour Order and has several conditions banning him from Morrisons, Tesco and Co-Op stores in the borough of Swindon.

Burrows was sentenced for nine counts of theft – on December 29 he entered the Co-Op store in Somerville Road and stole cheese worth nearly £150 and the following day he entered the same shop and made off with approximately £150 worth of meat.

On January 3, he returned to the store and stole £185 worth of alcohol, and on January 14, he made off with food totalling £234 from Morrisons in Marlowe Avenue.

PC Zoe Johnson said: “Burrows is a prolific thief, who, between the end of January and February stole hundreds of pounds worth of food, including meat, sweets, cheese and alcohol from various shops in Swindon. I am pleased a custodial sentence has been issued and that Burrows is now the subject of a Criminal Behaviour Order, effectively banning him from multiple stores within the town.

“It is important that we do not see shoplifting as a victimless crime, especially when it is repeated. We will continue to work closely with retailers to identify repeat offenders and use every tool available to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”
