Two monumental sculptures honouring Swindon's rich industrial heritage are set to be installed at the site of the former Honda factory, as part of a major £900 million redevelopment by developer Panattoni.

Planning permission has been granted for the installation of these artworks, which reflect the area's significant historical ties and symbolise its transformation.

The first sculpture, created by Lee Simmons, will be displayed at the site entrance.

This large steel piece evokes the silhouette of the iconic Supermarine Spitfire, representing the site's crucial role in its development during World War II.

Panattoni described the piece's design: "The idea explores the plane’s silhouette as if it were ascending into flight."

Designed to be impactful from a distance, the sculpture honours the site's heritage as a former airfield and car factory, reminiscent of traditional gate guardians found at RAF bases.

A second sculpture called Hammerman Echo will be situated near a green space and a wildlife corridor restored as part of the redevelopment.

Inspired by the Hammerman Poet and railway worker Alfred Williams, the circular steel construction evokes impressions of a jet engine, railway component, or car engine part.

Panattoni noted its significance along a key pedestrian route near South Marston Brook.

The artistry reflects the blend of Swindon's industrial past and aims to captivate viewers both from afar and those engaging closely with it.

While the former Honda plant was closed to the public, Panattoni plans for the reconfigured site to be publicly accessible once construction completes.

Designed as a park, the new development will include access for residents, allowing everyone to enjoy the artworks and the site's history.

With the approval of these plans, the sculptures are expected to be installed by September, providing Swindon with iconic landmarks celebrating its legacy and renewal.
