Spire Housing Developments has submitted a proposal to develop nine new houses on a greenfield site off Thornhill Road in South Marston, a village on the outskirts of Swindon.

This plan could complement an existing application for 57 additional houses in the surrounding area, near the Swindon Self-Storage site and St Michael’s Cottage.

Spire Housing’s proposal aims to build six two-bedroom houses and three three-bedroom houses, accommodating up to five people each, on a field designated as a brownfield site.

The development site, adjacent to Panattoni Park, will be bordered by hedges and trees on three sides, and includes public open space in the northeast.

Spire Housing mentions compliance with Swindon Borough Council's parking standards, offering two car parking spaces per dwelling.

The application assures minimal impact on adjacent residential amenities, emphasizing considerate screening and separation from local heritage assets.

The proposal is seen as addressing Swindon Borough Council's five-year housing land supply shortage, stressing the importance of smaller sites for quicker housing delivery compared to strategic developments.

Previous proposals for the site include plans for six houses, approved in 2005, alongside a 47-house scheme, while a plan for 115 houses in 2014 was withdrawn.

With potential for up to 66 homes, these development efforts could transform this largely rural area at the edge of Swindon, enhancing housing availability.

The application reflects ongoing property development activities and aims to contribute positively to housing needs in Swindon and surrounding locales.
