Smoking rates across Wiltshire are continuing to fall, with the council reinforcing its commitment to helping people quit and move towards a smoke-free future.

Rates have fallen to 8.4% in 2025, according to data from the Office of National Statistics, down from 2024's 10.6%, with the Council aiming to get smoking levels below 5% by 2029.

Speaking about the progress, Clare Cape, cabinet member for public health and NHS coordination at Wiltshire Council, described smoking cessation efforts in the county as successful and praised the range of support options available.

"It's great to see that people are taking the opportunity to quit with the support offered," Cllr Cape said. "Wiltshire Council initiatives, assistance from GPS, and the Smokefree Wiltshire app provide different avenues for quitting, which people are taking advantage of."

Plans to further reduce smoking levels

When asked about the next steps, Cllr Cape confirmed the council plans to continue its current approach, which has delivered year-on-year reductions and received positive feedback from residents.

"We're getting fantastic feedback," she said, mentioning how individuals have shared praise for quitting smoking coaches and spoken of their satisfaction with the decision to stop smoking. "We'll continue promoting the support available so more people can take the option as we aim for a smoke-free Wiltshire."

A message for those considering quitting

As the new year approaches, many people may consider quitting smoking as a resolution. Cllr Cape is encouraging residents to take that step, highlighting the benefits to personal health, the wider NHS, and the economy.

"My message is simply to give it a go," she said. "Set a date, use the support available, whether it's patches, vapes, or emotional help, and take this opportunity to make the beneficial change."

Wiltshire Council offers a range of support for those looking to quit smoking, including health coaching and advice on available aids.
