A police cordon in woods near Ludgershall has been lifted, but detectives say their investigation into the death of a former royal engineer continues.

Graham Pennycook, 64, was out walking his dog on 24th September in woods near the polo field, close to Perham Down but failed to return home.

He was found dead in woods later that day.

A murder investigation was launched by Wiltshire police and a cordon which had been in place since then was removed this morning (12th October).

Police previously said they "strongly believe" Graham was assaulted whilst in the woods.

Detectives from the force's Major Crime Team have thanked the community for their patience and cooperation.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, said: "The crime scene and associated cordon have now been lifted after our team of officers completed key forensic examinations at the location.

"While there is no longer a visible police presence at the scene, our investigation remains active and continues at pace. The removal of the cordon should not be seen as any reduction in our efforts, and dedicated detectives and specialist officers are continuing a range of enquiries to progress the investigation.

"We remain committed to establishing the full circumstances surrounding this incident and would continue to urge anyone with information to get in touch.

"It does not pass me by that the heightened police presence and cordon in the area will have increased anxieties for local people and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Ludgershall and Perham Down for their continued support and patience, which has enabled us to carry out our enquiries without disruption."

Police appeal for information
