HGV crash closes part of the M4 in Wiltshire
The westbound carriageway of the M4 in Wiltshire is closed between Junction 16 near Swindon and Junction 17 near Chippenham
The westbound carriageway of the M4 in Wiltshire is closed between Junction 16 near Swindon and Junction 17 near Chippenham due to a collision that occurred around 2:11 am.
Wiltshire Police are leading the response to the crash involving an HGV that struck the central reservation, resulting in extensive damage to around 300 metres of barrier.
The collision has caused lane closures on the east and westbound sides, along with a significant diesel spillage extending over 100 metres of the westbound carriageway.
Recovery operations are underway, but due to the extent of the barrier damage and the diesel contamination, the westbound carriageway is expected to remain closed into the morning peak.
Traffic caught within the closure measures more than a mile, and authorities are working to relieve the congestion and divert vehicles.
Drivers are advised to use alternative routes and follow diversion signs and symbols displayed on road signs.
Vehicles under 4.2m should exit the M4 at J16 and follow the A3102, continue via the B4042, reaching A429 and J17 of the M4.
Vehicles 4.2m or taller are advised to exit at J16, follow the A3102, turning onto A4, continue onto A350 northbound, reaching J17 of the M4.
Wiltshire Police said: "Please be aware that the M4 is currently closed in both directions, between junction 16 and 17, due to a road traffic collision.
"A heavy goods vehicle has struck the central reservaton and debris is blocking both carriageways.
"There are no reported injuries.
"Please seek alternative routes and expect delays in the area."
Travel delays are expected, and drivers should plan ahead or consider delaying their journey.
