Witnesses sought after serious collision in Rye involving van and pedestrians
Police appeal following injury incident outside shop
Police are appealing for witnesses in connection with a serious collision between a van and two pedestrians in Rye.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, 14th August, on East Street when a white Mercedes Vito van mounted the pavement and hit a man and a woman outside a shop at approximately 1.30pm.
The woman sustained potentially life-changing injuries, and both pedestrians were taken to hospital for treatment.
The shop front was also damaged.
A 37-year-old man from Willesborough, Kent, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Emergency services closed the road at the junction of High Street to attend to the casualties, investigate the incident, and recover the vehicle.
PC Sam Bourne of the Roads Policing Unit appealed to the public: “The area was very busy at the time of the collision, and we would like to hear from anyone who witnessed it or has any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage of the collision, which could help our investigation.”
She also expressed gratitude to the local community, stating, “We would like to thank the local community for their compassion towards those involved and for their patience while emergency services dealt with the incident.”
