Sussex Police say a major fire at a former convent site in St Leonards is being treated as arson.

It broke out at the disused school known as Holy Child Jesus on Magdalen Road last night but it's now under control.

Two local boys, aged 13 and 14, were arrested on suspicion of arson and transported to custody.

Emergency services were called to the incident in Magdalen Road around 5.07pm yesterday evening.

Hastings Borough Council says it's working with emergency services and is asking people to stay away from the site.

Police say that the public can expect to see a visible police presence in the area while they continue their enquiries, and anyone with any information is asked to report it online or call them on 101, quoting serial 1293 of 09/07.

Magdalen Road and the adjoining roads remain closed, and officers are urging motorists to seek alternative routes in the meantime.
