A member of staff has been taken to hospital with burns after a fire broke out at a scrapyard on Chartwell Road.

Lancing Business Park (LBP) said the fire started at 4.24pm on Thursday (October 22nd).

It said the fire is now completely out and access has been restored to all areas of the park.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service (WSFRS) was still on site this morning, monitoring the scrapyard to prevent further fire.

LBP asked drivers to go slowly around Chartwell Road to help keep crews safe.

Injured member of staff

LBP said one member of staff was hurt in the fire. South East Coast Ambulance Service (Secamb) was quickly on site and took him to Worthing Hospital for treatment.

LBP said he suffered 8% burns but is doing very well. It said he was in good spirits by 9.30pm when colleagues visited him.

LBP wished him a very speedy and full recovery.

Staff response

LBP said other staff on site when the fire started followed a well-rehearsed fire procedure and reacted immediately. It said their actions helped to minimise injury and contain the fire before the emergency services arrived.

LBP said staff also gave the emergency services as much information as possible. Emergency services and nearby businesses.

LBP said the emergency services began arriving at the park at 4.33pm, in what it described as horrendous weather. WSFRS received more than 50 calls to 999, LBP said.

LBP urged people to keep dialling 999 immediately if they see smoke on the park. It said it was driving on the A27 when its phone began ringing and apologised for calls it was unable to take while co-ordinating the response.

LBP said nearby businesses called 999, supported the emergency services and provided hot drinks and facilities.

It said Shoreham Vehicle Auctions helped close Chartwell Road by delivering traffic cones to the entrance, which assisted Sussex Police in enforcing the cordon. LBP also thanked J&H Automotive for offering assistance.
