Firefighters tackle wildfire in Abbots Wood
An area measuring approximately 600 metres by 200 metres of gorse and trees has been alight

Firefighters have been tackling a wildfire in Abbots Wood, Arlington.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 3:10pm yesterday (Monday 20 July 2026).
They sent 8 fire appliances, including crews from Hailsham, Eastbourne and Pevensey, 4x4s from Seaford and Crowborough and Uckfield's Dual Purpose Truck and Water Carrier.
Members of the public have been asked to avoid Abbots Wood and Robin Post Lane area.
Update from fire service at 6.10pm:
"Crews are making steady progress tackling the fire.
"An area measuring approximately 600 metres by 200 metres of gorse and trees is alight.
"A police drone is being used to help assess the scene.
"Please continue to avoid the area."
Update from fire service at 7pm:
"We continue to work at the scene, making steady progress.
"We are using three fire engines as well as a Dual Purpose Truck, a Water Carrier, and 4 by 4 vehicles.
Update from fire service at 7.45pm:
"Our High Volume Pump is being used to pump water at the scene.
"Police and forestry representatives are working alongside us.
"We are also grateful to local farmers who are assisting by damping down fire breaks and low vegetation to help control the incident.
Update from fire service at 8.45pm:
"Crews have been working extremely hard and have made good progress.
"We are scaling back the incident to two fire engines and one four-by-four.
"It is likely we will stay at the scene for several more hours.
Update from fire service at 6.45am on Tuesday (21 July):
"Firefighters are damping down multiple remaining hot spots.
"They are using flexi-packs, buckets of water and one jet."
Update from fire service at 10.30am on Tuesday:
"Due to the size of the area affected by fire, we remain at the scene, damping down hot spots."
