Man suffers "suspected spinal injuries" after jumping from Eastbourne pier
The RNLI advised against pier jumping, which he said could be "deadly"
A man has suffered "suspected spinal injuries" after he was recovered after jumping into the sea from Eastbourne Pier.
An incident was declared just before 8:15pm on Sunday evening (July 27th), after members of the public saw the man struggling after jumping into the sea.
An RNLI crew was called to help the man to shore, and was eventually pulled back onto land where he was seen to suffer from injuries to his back and spine.
Other emergency services were called to the scene, including the Coastguard and local ambulance crews.
The victim was eventually taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries - his condition currently remains unknown.
In a statement, the local RNLI station warned against pier jumping, saying that while it may appear to be a fun experience, it can be "deadly".
They explained: "The RNLI is urging people to think twice before jumping from piers, groynes, or sea walls.
"Hidden underwater hazards, sudden changes in water depth, strong tides, and the risk of cold water shock can all turn a split-second thrill into a tragedy. Even experienced swimmers can get caught off guard."
