Eastbourne man jailed for 18 years for rape and domestic abuse
Richard Bennett sentenced after years of abuse against a woman he knew
Richard Bennett, a 46-year-old man from Eastbourne, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for crimes of rape, assault, and domestic abuse against a woman known to him.
The victim reported Bennett's increasingly controlling and abusive behaviour on 5th February, revealing that he falsely claimed to be a ‘police informant’ to maintain her fear and prevent her from seeking help.
Throughout years of abuse, Bennett strangled, threatened, and sexually assaulted her repeatedly, leaving her petrified until she courageously chose to escape.
Following her report, the victim received safeguarding and support from specialist officers.
Bennett surrendered to law enforcement on 11th February, subsequently charged with multiple offences, including rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, coercive controlling behaviour, and strangulation.
He was convicted of these offences at Lewes Crown Court on 11th August and received his 18-year sentence on 18th September.
Detective Constable Marc Thomas praised the victim for her bravery throughout the investigation, stating: “The victim had suffered years of abuse at the hands of Bennett, impacting every part of her life. She has been strong in supporting this investigation and it is thanks to her that Bennett is now behind bars.”
