Armed Forces flag raised at East Sussex County Hall to honour military community
Flag flies for Armed Forces Week and upcoming Armed Forces Day
To celebrate Armed Forces Week and Armed Forces Day on 27th June, East Sussex County Hall has raised the Armed Forces flag to honour veterans, cadets, serving troops, and their families.
Cllr Victoria Carson, East Sussex County Council’s vice chairman and Armed Forces Champion, pointed out the significance of this gesture.
"Flying the flag honours all of those who give so much for our country, many of whom live and work in our county," Carson said.
"We owe a great deal to the men and women of the British Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force and Armed Forces Day gives us the opportunity to show our support and thanks to them."
East Sussex County Council is committed to supporting the armed forces community; it holds the Gold Award under the Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Support Scheme, recognising employers who positively support the armed forces.
The council provides 18 days of paid leave annually to Army Reserve members for military training and has trained its staff as armed forces ‘champions’ under the Ministry of Defence-funded Forces Connect South East programme.
Furthermore, the council is a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant, which ensures fair treatment and eliminates disadvantage for those who have served in the military.
The latest Census data reveals over 21,000 armed forces veterans reside in East Sussex, making it the fourth highest population of veterans in the South East.
