80-year-old man jailed for historical sexual abuse in West Sussex
Richard Beacher was charged with offences dating back over four decades
An 80-year-old man from West Sussex has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for rape and sexual abuse offences committed more than 40 years ago.
Richard Beacher, from Cox Green, Rudgwick, was convicted at Hove Crown Court after pleading guilty to nine offences.
The crimes were committed between 1978 and 1986, when the victim was between three and eight years old.
Beacher’s initial sentence of 24 years was reduced after he entered a guilty plea.
The victim reported the abuse to Sussex Police in 2021 and received support from specialist officers during the investigation.
Criminal Investigator Sophie Williams described the case as “shocking and deeply disturbing,” highlighting the victim's experience of prolonged sexual abuse that began at the age of three.
Williams praised the victim and witnesses for their courage and resilience which was instrumental in achieving justice.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to pursuing justice. This case serves as a clear reminder that, even after 40 years, offenders will be held accountable and justice will be delivered,” she said.
