A man involved in a three-vehicle collision that left one driver with life-changing injuries has been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison.

Attila Nagy, 43, from Knaphill, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on 6th January 2026 after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He received a two year and 10-month driving ban and will be required to sit a retest to regain his driving license.

The crash occurred at around 5pm on 24th February 2025 on Woking Road in Guildford. Police attended the scene to find significant damage to a Honda Jazz, BMW 3 Series, and Mercedes C-Class, as well as debris scattered across the carriageway. Witnesses described Nagy’s driving as dangerous.

Nagy, the driver of the Mercedes, initially claimed he was forced to take evasive action to avoid a fox running into the road from a nearby woodland. However, dash cam footage from his vehicle showed that he attempted to overtake the Honda Jazz and collided head-on with the BMW while returning to his lane.

The driver of the BMW suffered serious internal injuries and required extraction from their vehicle by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service before being taken to hospital. Their injuries will require lifelong medication. The drivers of the Mercedes and Honda Jazz escaped uninjured.

Commenting on his actions, Nagy said he attempted the overtake because he believed the Honda driver was travelling too slowly. Investigators confirmed that there was no evidence of a fox in the footage.

Investigating officer PC Pat Nixon from Surrey Police’s Roads Policing Unit said: “This collision could have ended very differently. Nagy’s actions showed a complete disregard for the safety of others on the road and could have had fatal consequences.

“He showed no remorse for his behaviour, claiming a fox was the cause of the collision. Our investigation proved this to be a lie. I am glad we have brought some justice and closure for the victim in this case who was travelling home innocently."

PC Nixon also warned of the dangers of dangerous driving, adding: “Dangerous or careless driving is one of the ‘fatal five’ factors which are considered the main causes of serious injury or fatal collisions on our roads.

“Anyone who commits these offences could be the reason why a loved one doesn’t make it home. Is it really worth your freedom?”
