BP has announced it's leaving its offices in Sunbury in Surrey.

The move comes after BP took stock of its UK properties. The Sunbury site is owned by Spelthorne Borough Council, but BP leases it from them, so the authority say there's no immediate threat to the Council's finances.

Even though BP is planning to leave, it will keep paying rent until 2036 under the current lease agreements.

In a post on social media Councillor Harry Boparai said around 1,800 staff are currently based at the site, with roles expected to relocate elsewhere. He added that the council will keep residents updated as the situation develops.

Councillor Lawrence Nichols, Chair of the Commercial Assets Sub-Committee said it's important to emphasise there is time to get a plan in place:

"While this marks a significant change, there is time to plan properly.

"We recognise that the potential loss of a major local employer like bp will raise concerns about jobs and the wider economic impact on our community.

"Our priority will be to support residents and local businesses through this period of change, working with partners to understand the implications and identify new opportunities."

Leader of the Council, Cllr Joanne Sexton added:

"This news is unexpected, but I want to reassure our residents and local businesses that we will take a measured approach, working with bp and expert advisors to explore options that benefit our community, support local employment, and make the best use of this key site."

BP has committed to working closely with the Council to support the transition, its employees and the local community.

BP has maintained a presence in Sunbury for over a century, since purchasing a Georgian mansion in 1916 for research, which later became a major research centre.

The Sunbury site served as a core research and development hub for decades.
