Police in Bury St Edmunds are appealing for information after reports of a possible altercation involving a distressed woman sparked welfare concerns on Sunday night.

At around 9.45pm on 11 May, a passerby reported seeing a man and a woman engaged in what appeared to be a struggle on Mount Road, near the junction with Tassel Road.

The witness told police the woman seemed visibly distressed, prompting fears for her safety.

Despite officers arriving on the scene shortly after the call, no trace of the pair was found. No one has since come forward to report an assault or incident, and the individuals involved remain unidentified.

Officers are now working to piece together exactly what happened, including reviewing CCTV and carrying out further searches in the Mount Road area.

Detectives say they are keeping an open mind, acknowledging the possibility that no crime took place—but they are also concerned that someone may need help and hasn’t yet come forward.

“The priority is making sure this woman is safe,” said Detective Inspector Cat Thompson from West CID. “It may turn out to be a misunderstanding, but if someone is out there who needs help, we need to know. Equally, if the people involved are reading this and nothing serious happened, we’d still like to hear from them to clarify what occurred.”

The woman has been described only as having long, light-coloured hair.

Police are urging anyone who was in the area between 9.30pm and 10pm on Sunday night to get in touch. They’re particularly keen to hear from drivers who may have dashcam footage from Mount Road during that time frame.
