A man who threatened his ex-partner with a knife and subjected her to months of abuse has been jailed.

Warren Meadows, 34, argued with the victim and punched a door off its hinges on 5 October.

The victim called police and did not speak, but Meadows could be heard in the background and officers were dispatched.

When officers arrived at the property near Ely, Meadows had already left.

The victim, who was with a friend, told them about several recent incidents, including one in which Meadows had thrown a deodorant can at her and then pushed her into a radiator.

In September, he smashed the glass front of an oven and threw a knife at her, narrowly missing. When the victim removed the knife from a door, he grabbed her hand and pushed the knife towards her throat while threatening her.

Later that month Meadows attacked the woman, giving her blurred vision and bruising.

Meadows, of no known address but from the Brandon area of Suffolk, admitted threatening a person with a bladed article, two counts of assault by beating and criminal damage.

On Friday (25 April) at Cambridge Crown Court he was jailed for 32 months.

DC Megan Solomon said: “Meadows behaved despicably as he subjected the victim to prolonged abuse.

“As well as the physical trauma, his actions have had a significant detrimental impact on her life throughout the relationship.

“This case shows that if you are in the middle of a threatening situation you don’t have to speak to the 999 call handler to get help. Hearing what was going on in the background was enough for officers to attend, but pressing 55 after calling also helps officers know the call is genuine.

“We’re working hard to bring perpetrators of abuse to justice and protect victims.”
