The Environment Agency has updated a flood alert for the Suffolk coast at Southwold, warning that flooding is possible in low-lying coastal areas, including Reydon Marshes, during this morning’s high tide.

The alert is in force between 10:15am and 12:15pm today (24 October), with a peak tide level of 1.62 metres AODN forecast at Lowestoft around 11:15am — about 0.64 metres higher than tide tables due to strong westerly winds and spring tide conditions.

A Wind Force 7 westerly is expected to drive higher-than-normal sea levels, and authorities say that locks and flood gates along the coast are being closed as a precaution.

Residents and visitors are being urged to avoid coastal roads, footpaths and car parks, which could flood at high tide. The alert covers harbourside areas and other low-lying coastal locations around Southwold.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said the situation will be reviewed by 10:00am on Saturday, 25 October, or earlier if conditions change.

The Environment Agency recommends monitoring local weather, news and travel updates, and be prepared to act on your personal flood plan.

Residents can sign in to their flood warning accounts to add or remove locations, update details, or manage their alert preferences.

The Agency says it will continue to monitor the coast closely as weather conditions develop through the weekend.
