Suffolk Fire and Rescue prepare for a busy summer and ask public to stay safe
They're encouraging the public to read up on safety for water, bonfires and other things before getting involved.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue are urging everyone to educate themselves on safety before engaging in any water activities.
It's as the weather continues to get warmer and they go into what they've called their busiest time of year.
We spoke to Head of prevention at Suffolk Fire and Rescue Lee Wilkins, he told us they key message he would like to get across is "prevention is better than a cure."
He's asking that the public do their best to keep themselves safe this summer and look at the material online which has "advice and education for people on how they can be water aware and keep themselves safe around our our waterways and coastlines."
The Suffolk Fire Service and others across the UK are all championing this in their Be Water Aware campaign, which started in 2016 and aims to reduce water deaths or water-related fatalities by 50%.
"A lack of realisation that this affects all of us"
Lee told us that throughout the year, they go to as many events as possible to be able to engage with the public and pass on safety messages, and even though Lee tells us they have good engagement, he still worries the reality doesn't sink in for some people.
He said, "The issue, I suppose, is that we still, year in year out, have fires, we still have car crashes. We still unfortunately have people getting injured or, heaven forbid, losing their lives in waterways.
"So, even though we engage well, people seem to listen. I can't help but feel that there's always an issue that people think, oh, that'll never happen to me.. Yeah, it's good information and yeah, I'll pay attention. But I'll be all right, me and my family will be all right.
"And then there's almost, I suppose, a lack of realisation that this affects all of us. We all need to be aware. Whether that's with fire safety, road safety and particularly at the moment water safety.
"Especially in the warm weather comes. I think just by educating yourself and following some simple tips, you can go out with your family, with your children, enjoy the lovely weather, play in the water, go down to the beach and have loads of fun."
Lee told us another reason why he wants people to educate themselves and be safe is not only so they're not hurt, but also so the fire service can send help where it's needed.
"Unfortunately, people still crash their cars during those times, people still have house fires, etc.
"We want to try and do our best to prevent as many emergency events as possible, but particularly, there are certain types that I feel are more preventable than others.
" I suppose my concern is that the impact that these events can have on our ability to respond to all different types of incidents.
"We ask everybody to play their part in making sure that we keep everybody as safe as possible and that Suffolk Fire and Rescue service can go about their core business and respond when we're needed to those who reap those people who really need us."
