A 29-year-old man has been convicted of manslaughter following the death of a young man in Felixstowe last summer.
Daniel Martin, of Felix Road, Felixstowe, was found guilty by a jury at Ipswich Crown Court today after denying responsibility for the death of 25-year-old Charlie Stephen David Greaves from Ipswich.
The incident occurred on the evening of Saturday 10 August 2024, when emergency services were called to reports of an assault on the promenade near Undercliff Road West. The following morning, police were contacted by the ambulance service and attended a property in Carr Road, Felixstowe, where Charlie was found dead.
During the trial, the court heard that the assault was triggered by a dispute over Charlie’s dog, which was not on a lead. Martin, who was with a group at the time, made comments about the dog, sparking an argument between the two men. Witnesses described seeing Martin strike Charlie in the face, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground.
Charlie was knocked unconscious and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and returned to the Carr Road address, where he later died.
Martin was arrested two days later, on Monday 12 August, initially on suspicion of murder. He was later formally charged, although the charge was reduced to manslaughter before trial proceedings began.
Detective Inspector Mark Hughes, who led the investigation, praised the bravery of Charlie’s family, who attended every day of the trial.
“While this conviction can bring some closure for Charlie’s family, it does not ease the pain of losing a loved one,” he said. “What started out as a disagreement between two strangers about a dog on a sunny evening by the seaside led to the death of a young man.
“This is a stark reminder of the consequences of getting involved in physical violence. No matter your intentions, one punch could change the lives of so many people in an instant.”
Daniel Martin will be sentenced at Ipswich Crown Court on July 4.
