A 55-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of seven non-recent child sexual offences.

Gary Grant, previously of Languard Road in Felixstowe and more recently residing on Quinton Road in Needham Market, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on 14th May, receiving his sentence for crimes committed against a young girl.

On 16th January, a jury found Grant guilty of several offences following a five-day trial, including four counts of buggery and three counts of indecent assault against a girl under 16.

The court revealed that the victim was 13 years old when the abuse began, with Grant in his mid-20s at the time.

It was disclosed during proceedings that Grant would provide the victim with cigarettes in exchange for sex.

Alongside his prison sentence, Grant was given a restraining order that is effective until further notice.

DC Ellie Evans-Eastman, who led the case, commented:

“The offences were reported to police in 2021 after the victim’s social media showed Grant as a suggested friend, bringing back traumatic flashbacks."

“Grant manipulated and groomed a young girl without remorse, causing lasting emotional and physical consequences for the victim."

“In her victim personal statement read out in court, she described having nightmares and violent reactions in her sleep."

“I commend her for the brave step of reporting Grant’s crimes and her strength during the trial."

“I hope his conviction brings her some peace."

Victims of rape or sexual assault are urged to seek help and report their experiences to the police.
