A dolphin that appeared to be tangled in netting has been freed and released back into the river in Ipswich.

Firefighters were called to Sir Bobby Robson Bridge on 14th October following reports of a dolphin in distress in the water.

Crews from Ipswich Princes Street worked alongside marine wildlife specialists after receiving information that an adult common dolphin appeared to be entangled in netting around its head.

Firefighters launched a rescue boat so they could safely assess the animal and provide live footage to wildlife experts.

After consulting a marine vet and specialist wildlife organisations, it was decided the dolphin was still able to swim.

They agreed the most appropriate course of action was for a specialist team to try to remove the netting.

Police were also asked to attend to help manage members of the public who had gathered nearby and to maintain public safety.

In an update at 4.30pm, the fire service said the dolphin had been successfully freed from the netting and released back into the river.

Specialist marine wildlife partners are monitoring its welfare for a short while.

The fire service said the rescue had been safely resolved.
