People in Ipswich are being encouraged to start the New Year by reviewing their finances, making clear plans, and seeking advice where needed, as household costs continue to put pressure on budgets.

Nelleke van Helfteren from Citizens Advice Ipswich said the New Year is often a key moment for people to take stock of their finances and make informed changes.

“I think if you're coming into new territory, the New Year is often a time when people make new plans. You've got to budget, you've got to make lists, you've got to plan,” she said.

She highlighted the importance of becoming a more conscious consumer, particularly when it comes to everyday bills.

“There are lots of tools to help you budget, to help you work out. Maybe this is the year that I'm going to change electricity provider,” she said. “And maybe this is the year I'm going to change my mobile provider.”

Van Helfteren said researching providers and reviewing contracts can lead to meaningful savings over the course of the year.

“There are lots of ways of saving money,” she said. “Citizens Advice across the region have got lots of people out there ready to help you manage your bills, manage what you're spending.”

She also encouraged people to check whether they are on the most suitable energy tariffs and insurance policies, warning that many households could be paying more than necessary.

“Do make take advantage of going and checking out people's websites and also making appointments to talk to people about energy consumption and whether you're on right tariffs because a lot of money can be saved,” she said.

Renewing insurance policies is another area where people should take care, according to van Helfteren.

“Make sure you do actually get the best rates,” she said. “All of this is important.”

She added that writing everything down can help people stay organised and avoid missing important renewals or opportunities to save.

“Make sure all of those things are on it,” she said, referring to lists and plans for the year ahead.
