Murder investigation launched after Bury St Edmunds assault victim dies

A man who was left critically ill after a serious assault in Bury St Edmunds on Saturday (26 July) has sadly died, prompting police to launch a homicide investigation.

Officers were called to the St Olaves shopping precinct at 8:05pm on Saturday, 26 July, following reports that a man in his 50s had been seriously assaulted.

The victim sustained significant head injuries and was taken to West Suffolk Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he has since passed away.

Police have confirmed that the investigation will now proceed as a homicide. Officers are working closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to determine the next steps.

Andrew Allen, 54, of Severn Road, Bury St Edmunds, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday, 27 July, and initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm. He appeared at Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 28 July, and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear next at Cambridge Crown Court on Tuesday, 26 August.

Police believe the suspect and victim were known to each other and are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.

Officers continue to support the victim’s family during this difficult time and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
