Work officially begins transforming Newcastle's former Zanzibar site

Construction work has officially commenced at the former Zanzibar nightclub site in Newcastle-under-Lyme, marking a new chapter in the town's redevelopment journey.

Capital&Centric, known for their social impact projects, are transforming this long-standing brownfield site into a mixed-use neighbourhood, featuring 63 affordable homes and five enterprise units.

The site, located at the prominent junction of Marsh Parade and Hassell Street, has remained vacant for nearly 15 years following the nightclub's closure and demolition.

HBC Construction has been appointed to oversee the project, bringing their expertise in residential-led regeneration.

Martin Crews, Development Director at Capital&Centric, emphasised the project's significance, saying:

“Zanzibar is one of those sites that lots of locals will have a connection to.

It’s a really prominent gateway into the town centre but has long been waiting for its next chapter."

Crews highlighted the transformation's role in providing accessible housing, stating:

“We’re creating genuinely affordable homes with Aspire in a brilliant central location, helping to create a new community while supporting the wider regeneration of Newcastle-under-Lyme."

Jonny Nolan, Development Manager at Capital&Centric, remarked on the project’s progress:

“This is a site that’s been waiting in the wings for a long time, so getting boots on the ground is a big moment.

We’re now moving at pace to turn it into something that works for the town - new homes people can actually afford, space for local businesses and a neighbourhood that feels connected."

The initiative is bolstered by over £916,000 in developer funding from Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, demonstrating a strong commitment to revitalising the town centre.

This development aims to create a welcoming community that blends with the wider high street, ensuring it is not only a place to live but also an integral part of the town.

The transformation is expected to bring new energy to the area, enhancing Newcastle-under-Lyme’s appeal as a place to live, work, and visit.
