New war memorial to honour Royal Doulton workers in Burslem
Plans unveiled to commemorate fallen workers from World Wars
Plans have been unveiled for a new memorial in Burslem honouring Royal Doulton factory workers who died in the World Wars.
The Kilngate Memorial will commemorate 59 workers who served their country but never returned.
Located centrally and facing Nile Street, the memorial reflects the route many workers took to enlist.
Supported by St Modwen and Miller Homes, the community-led project revives the lost original memorial and will recognise over 1,600 individuals across two planned monuments.
St Modwen and Miller Homes lead the project with contributions from local craftspeople.
Meighs & Westleys Ltd makes the bronze panels, Tailored Stone crafts the stone surround, and local sculptor Andy Edwards designs the intricate bronze detailing for the memorial. Edwards is renowned for creating the iconic Lemmy statue, which attracts Motörhead fans from around the world to Burslem.
“The Kilngate Memorial brings together Burslem’s industrial history and its wartime story," Mike Lightfoot, project leader, said.
“This memorial is an important part of Burslem’s history," Councillor Steve Watkins from Stoke-on-Trent City Council said.
“It ensures these workers are never forgotten.”
The Burslem Remembers memorial is due next year, with ongoing research into those named on the memorials.
