Tunstall clock tower chimes again after specialist repairs
Restoration part of broader Tunstall town centre improvements
Tunstall's historic clock tower will once again ring out after the successful completion of specialist repairs by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.
The Grade II listed landmark, which dates back to 1893, is now operational for the first time since November 2024.
The clock tower's rehabilitation is part of the council’s wider plans to rejuvenate Tunstall, which includes a £4.5 million investment to redevelop the town centre's public spaces.
With a height of 16 metres, the tower is a significant feature in the town, funded originally by public subscription.
It includes a lifesize bust of local MP and philanthropist Sir Smith Child, commissioned by The Ladies of Tunstall.
Councillor Finlay Gordon-McCusker praised the restoration, saying: “The Clock Tower is an essential part of Tunstall’s story and a visible reminder of the civic pride that built the town. When a landmark like this falls silent, something important is lost. Restoring the chimes is a statement of intent: that Tunstall’s heritage matters, and that we will look after what previous generations built. This work secures the tower for the long term and forms part of a wider programme to renew the town centre properly – respecting its history while investing in its future."
The council is also exploring further restoration work around the Clock Tower as part of its Levelling Up-funded proposals to enhance the public realm.
